The animals and wildlife we encounter on holiday can be one of the most, memorable and distinctive features of a trip. Any great holiday involves seeing some of the local residents up close - whatever their species! Even if it is not the entire focus of your trip, incorporating some time into appreciating local wildlife can be a unique experience. Your animal-loving travel companion will thank you for it or you may be the animal lover yourself! Browse the suggestions below for inspiration on how to enjoy and appreciate the animals in your destination.
1) Swimming with Sharks
It may seem terrifying, but many people swear by the life changing exhilaration of seeing these powerful creatures up close. Sharks are not naturally aggressive, and are such an amazing feat of natural design that they are well worth seeing. Swimming with sharks or observing from a cage had a bad reputation when it wasn’t adequately monitored or disturbed the animals. But reputable tours and experiences exist that are often part of an overall education and conservation aim. These can be an especially rewarding (and safe) way to experience these wonderful animals. 2) A Safari A safari drive with a passionate guide is an unbeatable way to experience the breathtaking wildlife of the desert. Websites like SafariDrive offer more information and great deals. Observing animals in their natural habitat is often far more memorable and authentic than in a zoo setting, for example. An off-road drive is an experience in itself and a great opportunity to take in a stunning local landscape too. 3) Crufts Dog Show The Crufts dog show is one of the most famous in the world and with good reason. The standard and variety of the breeds on offer is a paradise for dog lovers all over the world. It’s not just pedigrees that are celebrated any more, either. There are special categories for rescue dogs and dogs that have served a special purpose for young or vulnerable owners. Dogs of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds are honoured and celebrated. There are also special measures in place to ensure that breeders are not emphasising unhealthy breed features. An experience not to be missed. 4) Visit A Sanctuary There are many truly inspiring animal sanctuaries all around the world that offer the opportunity to visit. They can serve an educational purpose and raise additional funds. They also give extra love and attention to their resident animals! The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica is a memorable example and California’s The Gentle Barn has a huge following online. Visiting these animals and their dedicated carers can be a magical, life-affirming experience. 5) Volunteering with Conservation Even while on holiday, there are opportunities to contribute to the wildlife and communities that we visit. In some of the most beautiful locations in the world, there are several ways you can help. You can contribute to marine conservation, protect breeding grounds, and volunteer with long-running projects. When we are benefitting so much from a holiday in a beautiful land, it can be very satisfying to also give something back. Whatever your skills, time constraints, or budget, you can lend a helping hand.
