Everyone talks about the downtown revival and how the area has changed gradually over time. Go check it out yourself – any given weekend, you are bound to find a host of activities to indulge in. The best part – almost all the metro stations lead downtown! The best way to discover the area is just walk around the neighborhood. And now, with the new Santa Monica line, you can head straight to the beach from there too!
Start your day strong with breakfast at Plan Check Kitchen and Bar. This downtown burger bar has two other locations and one coming soon in Santa Monica but the DTLA location on Wilshire Blvd is just a few blocks from the 7th and Metro station. On offer is American comfort food in small plate format so the portions are about right to allow for sharing plates and trying few different menu items – which you will want to do. Everything from their Brazilian roast French press coffee to Cruller donuts for dessert is lip-smacking delicious. Make this the opportunity to check out their trademarked ketchup leather, its what makes their burgers unique and ensures the buns don’t get soggy. Recommended on the menu are the stuffed mushrooms, their signature burger starring aforementioned ketchup leather, and the smokey fried chicken. Expect to spend an hour here for a leisurely visit, or longer if your day allows.
Head on over to the Central Library next. Floor upon floor of books will make any bibliophile’s heart flutter but history buffs can get their fill here too. Try one of their many guided tours, or do a self-guided one. Their gift store is a creative gem! They also host traveling exhibits and right now have one titled The State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda that’s quite the eye opener. The exhibit itself could easily take an hour or two to fully absorb every piece of information shared. The library premises could take just as long easily, depending on your interest for what the venue offers. This is the third largest central library in the nation!
The State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda traveling exhibit is an in-depth case study examining how propaganda was used in the Nazi party to gain power. It challenges visitors to analyze and question the information exhibited. This is an exhibit for all ages and definitely brings a topic of great importance to the fore, providing an opportunity for dialogue and conversation about one of the defining moments of history. The exhibit is open to the public all through June, July and most of August – a highly recommended experience. This is an interactive and immersive journey so be ready for not only images and narrative text but also video, audio and more. The State of Deception Exhibition is presented by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in conjunction with the downtown Los Angeles Central Library. For an afternoon/evening break, consider Fig at 7th your pit stop. The semi-outdoor mall has a lively outdoor food court area where they host events during the summer. So whether its some tummy TLC you are looking for or retail therapy, this space takes care of it all. You are bound to find a great deal here while shopping or fun activities to indulge in with family and friends all year long.
Other tours in the area, if you are interested, include DTLA Walking Tours - they cover everything from art to architecture, history to haunted tales and more. Another DTLA tour to consider is offered by the LA Conservancy. A couple of options available here for nature of tour, duration, and variety of topics covered, etc. Finally, there is the Free LA tour – not as many options but worth a shot if it fits in your schedule.
Save the best for last as always! To end the night with a bang, visit Q Sushi for your last meal before you head away from the DTLA area. Q Sushi is one of those hidden gems – all the other busy restaurants around might fight for your attention but head into Q Sushi and it’s a sanctuary from the madding crowds outside. Surprisingly, this is one of the few places where you are encouraged to eat with your fingers to truly enjoy your food. You are served the day’s highest quality selections, a total of close to 20 courses – tsumami, sashimi and nigiri.
