With no major plans for July 4th weekend, San Diego presented itself as a strong contender for a weekend getaway and off we went. Just a 3-4 hour drive from Hollywood, and with plenty of AirBnB options in emerging neighborhoods like North Park, which was conveniently located close to the zoo and few other attractions we wanted to hit up, heading over was a no brainer.
Drove in Saturday the 2nd, checked into our cute and cozy bungalow and made a beeline for the Maritime Museum. Stopped by the Waterfront Park after, followed by wining and dining in Little Italy.
Used up all of Sunday the 3rd for a trip to the San Diego Zoo. Got there an hour after they opened and left well into the evening. The good part – got some San Diego City Cards in advance which helped beat the lines at the entrance. The bad part, not really but you should be aware, the zoo is HUGE! There is tons to see so best if you head there on your own – a large group or lots of kiddos will make this longer than warranted. You will love the experience though. Dined in the North Park area after - beer tasting at Modern Times Flavordome and dinner at Underbelly next door. Checked out of our bungalow Monday but decided July 4th was THE day to be heading to the USS Midway. It was great to see decked up in all its glory. Simply doing the self-guided audio tour can take you all day! Began the drive back home late afternoon and that was a successful trip, all things considered.
