Talk about a subscription service with a difference! In today’s world of subscription boxes for everything you can think of, and then some, I was happy to hear about Bokksu and the premium snacks curated with a monthly theme coming all the way from Japan. I got to review the November 2018 Classic Bokksu Tea Story subscription box and enjoyed the treats from another country delivered straight to my home.

The package comes in a sturdy square gift box with snacks neatly packed in and a brochure explaining the different offerings. Since the theme for the month was tea story, every snack was tea influenced in some way. Also the goal of the company is to help discover Japan through its snacks so the snacks in this box were from a few different prefectures- Niigata, Aichi, Hiroshima, Saitama and Tokyo.

Here’s a rundown of everything received in the box and my thoughts. Some of the flavors were new to me and took some getting used to while others were welcome tastes that I enjoyed. I had not tasted most of these snacks before so the majority of the box felt like it was full of new things for me to try. I quite enjoyed experimenting with trying some of the sweet and savory picks for the month...

Olive Oil Spicy Pepper Senbei – This was one of my favorite savory snacks in the box. The crunch and kick, saltiness and pepper, make for an addictive combo. I could eat a box of this alone I think.

Hokkaido Cheese Mochi – Another fave, I gobbled this up in no time. I enjoy mocha and this was like a Japanese version of cheese puffs. Another one that I’d stock by the dozens in my pantry if allowed.

Gogo No Koucha Milk Tea Cake – A sweet tea cake in just the right portion size. The floral smell will embrace you as you open the packet and if you like mildly flavored sweet cakes, then you wont be able to put this down.

Ice Coffee Chocolate Sandwich – Little miniature medallion size cookies of coffee goodness. They can be eaten chilled but I couldn’t wait so had them at room temperature and they were yum.

Matcha Milk Beans – Am yet to take a liking to matcha so this wasn’t my favorite part but the snack is crunchy and mild. It’s a peanut covered with matcha milk chocolate so you get some nuttiness and sugar in a bite.

Matcha Chocolate Coated Pecans – Despite not being a big fan of matcha, this was an interesting snack for me - the pecans made it worthwhile. The thin layer of matcha chocolate coating helped.

Foliage Rice Crackers – Crispy rice crackers shaped and colored like fall foliage! I’m unsure what the different flavors were but there was a mix of savory tastes in this one package alone. Again a great teatime snack.

Yamematcha Mini Dorayaki – This is another mini teacake with a little filling on the inside, mild flavored and light so as to not overpower your tea flavors. The bean filling in the center is quite the pleasant surprise.

Alfort Milk Tea Chocolate – Mini cookie or biscuit bars with a bar of chocolate on one side. These are bite sized, crunchy and milky sweet treats. Again the soft biscuit helps offset the sweetness of the milk tea chocolate

Bonus snack: Hojicha Latte Chocolate Mochi – the box had an additional surprise for me, some mochi filled with chocolate ganache. Gelatinous and mildly flavored, this was definitely an unexpected surprise.

Genmaicha – Finally the tea itself. I found sachets of genmaicha tea in this box – a mix of sencha leaves and roasted brown rice both of which are said to be staples of Japanese diet. I quite liked the mild and calming flavor of the tea itself and it went well with the snacks provided in the box so a good pick to complement the many flavors that the treats in the box offered up.

These curated boxes of Japanese snacks are delivered to your doorstep every month straight from Japan. The classic boxes like the one reviewed here are $39 and a smaller tasting box is $25. Great for gifting or as a treat for yourself. It’s amazing how much they stuff into the box so I would totally agree this is value for money. You are sure to find something to tickle your taste buds in here.

Their February Valentine’s themed Love Story box becomes available next week and includes goodies such as the Strawberry Tiramisu KitKat, Chocolate Anpan, Beauty Red Herbal Tea and Spicy Mini Heart senbei among others. If I were you, I’d subscribe or order the one box right now to get it in time for Valentine’s – anybody receiving this is sure going to feel pretty darn special!
